This article was commissioned by Stephanie White for a special edition of On Site Review entitled ‘Mapping and Photography’. It addressed the role of architectural photography within the architectural media through a reflection on our earlier article for The Architects’ Journal on the Open and Shut House by Toh Shimazaki Architects, in which experimental ‘fragment photography’ and more conventional modes of architectural imagery were combined: ‘The article sets up a dialectic relationship between the ‘fragment’ – which unequivocally expresses the actions of the medium, foregrounding the process of making and thus the role of the author – with a generic norm that works precisely to eradicate all signs of process within the creation of an image that supports the fiction of an unmediated photographic realism’ (p.10).
